On page 24 of the report, Speck describes the stamps made by the Anicinabek of Kitigan Zibi and Pikwakanagan. He emphasizes the influence that cohabitation with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) at lake of the Two Mountains had on these families between 1720 and the early 1800s. The creations of the Southern Anicinabek, the author notes, blend the artistic traditions of both nations.
Speck writes that the Anicinabek almost systematically stamp plant motifs with potatoes and animal motifs with wooden blocks. He suggests this custom may have originated from a time when a symbolic relation was suggested between the material of a stamp and various images. This however remains impossible to confirm, since even the Anicinabek he spoke with were unaware of it. - Format
